Façade Painting: Learn About the Process
Façade Access and Construction Logistics
One of the first considerations when painting façades is access to the area to be worked on. The most common and safest solution is scaffolding, which offers great mobility and visibility to monitor the progress of the work. In addition, advertising can be installed during scaffolding work, which can generate a source of income for the owners, helping to reduce the cost of the work.
Although alternatives such as bailéu and rappel painting do exist, they require more complex installation and are more difficult to monitor.
Crack Repair and Surface Preparation
Before starting to paint, it is essential to treat cracks and imperfections in the façade. Cracks must be opened, cleaned and filled with suitable mortar. When necessary, we use a mixture with more lime to prevent shrinkage and new cracks. This ensures that the surface is ready for the primer, which increases waterproofing and improves paint adhesion.
Choosing the right paint for your façade
The quality of the paint is decisive for the durability of the paintwork. Investing in good quality paint means less maintenance and better long-term results. The best exterior paints have specific characteristics, such as low water permeability and resistance to UV rays. They should also be water-repellent, preventing the formation of algae and fungus, and allow the walls to “breathe”, which helps maintain the structural health of the building.
There are two main options for painting façades: acrylic paint and membrane paint. Acrylic paint is ideal for less damaged areas, with a durability of up to 15 years. On the other hand, membrane paint is suitable for more deteriorated facades, as it has greater impermeability and is more effective at covering cracks.
Regardless of the choice, it is important to remember that subsequent painting should follow the original paint type, unless there is a lot of deterioration.
The Color of the Facade: Style and Functionality
Choosing the color of the façade is an aesthetic decision that should take into account the architectural style of the property and the sun exposure. Light colors are popular in Portugal, as they help to reflect light and fit in well with the traditional style of the buildings. However, bolder tones can give the building a modern and distinctive look.
It’s important to note that some colors can suffer more wear and tear from constant exposure to the sun. It is therefore essential to choose the color based not only on personal taste, but also on the environmental conditions of the location.
